Larry Pine: Teacher, Eisenhower School

WOW!  This is the official website of Eisenhower School memorabilia.  Even though the school continues into the Twenty Teens, this site specializes in alumni quotes and school memories for the early years.  Your thoughts will trigger the special memories of you and others in the glory years at Eisenhower School.

A Bit of Historical Perspective

As you know, I started out as a child.  My parents, Warren and Lorraine, have both been promoted to Glory.  I was raised in Northern California until the age of five.  By the first grade I was living in Aptos and attended Aptos School, which at the time was a K-8.  Watsonville High was the next stop.  I rode the bus about eight miles twice a day and graduated in 1964.  I had been in the band and headed to Cabrillo College to study music.  Cabrillo was great.  I next graduated from Bethany College in Scotts Valley with a multi-subjects teaching credential.  My masters in Education Administration was completed at San Jose State University in 1983.

You Can't Do It Alone!!

No, I didn't do it by myself.  It was the grace of God that carried me through all aspects of my life.  My wonderful wife, Sharon, has been, and is, the best wife a man ever had.  My two sons, Kevin and Owen, put up with many lonely hours while I did school work at home and at school.  The staff and administration all worked to help my weaknesses and maximize my strengeths.  The students worked hard, played hard, and grew to be fine members of our community. Parents and friends added steady support.  Today, I am extremely proud as I see and hear of their personal accomplishments.  Here and now, I want to tell you that "YOU ARE INCREDIBLE."

FAVORITE SCIENCE VIDEOS    You might remember the title "HEMO, the MAGNIFICENT",  "Unchained Goddess." or "The Restless Sea."  These are part of a classic science series put on by the Bell Telephone Company.  Your kids and you will enjoy checking them out again by looking them up on Youtube.  These are perfect for distance learning or science entertainment.

The picture below shows the fifth wing of portable rooms that stretch out past the old Muscleman and newer play structure. I think there are 12 rooms plus two bathrooms.  Across from the original kinder rooms are now five portables.  Two of them are YMCA daycare rooms.  The Garden Lab is next to the street by the YMCA.

The passing of Rose Tyson is noted on the Contact Page.

Teaching at Eisenhower School

I have had the best teaching career ever.  Sam Lawson, of Lawson Middle School fame, hired me in 1971 to teach the entire fourth grade at Warren School in the Cupertino District.  The tiny school closed, and we moved the whole student body to Eisenhower School in 1976.  I continued there, by the grace of God, for over 30 years, teaching 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.  Larry Pine retired in June of 2007 after 36 years of teaching in the same community.

Sixth Grade Picnic

For several months I posted a particular memory of the picnics at Warburton Pool.  I told of walking between the rows of sixth graders who splashed me while I crossed the pool.  Recently Mark Hanson sent me a link to a video about Frontier Village.  For a few years, the Sixth Grade Picnic was at Frontier Village.  Miss Ricketts and other teachers gathered the classes just inside the park.  Kids were told when to meet back, and they took off in small groups to enjly the park on their own.  If you have a memory of that to share, send it to me for this space.  Here is the link Mark sent.
